Americans look to casual sports in rough times
    The Associated Press
The number of pick-up basketball players increased by 13 percent since 2006 soccer by 14 percent tackle football by 11 percent. Even pick-up baseball — not the easiest sport to whip up a game quickly — saw a 17 percent increase with slow-pitch softball at 9 percent. Mike May director of communications for the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association that conducted the survey said the increased number of casual players ages 6 and up has a direct connection with the sluggish economy of the past two years. “I think people are being more creative with their time and their athletic pursuits” May said. “They see they can still play the game but don’t have to make financial or time commitment to be at a certain place at a certain time for two practices and a game every week. “SGMA conducted an internet survey of between 30000 and 40000 households May said and found that while organized team sports and leagues are still popular — 11 of 18 sports mentioned in the survey had majorities playing organized ball — the number of pick-up players is increasing on almost a sport-by-sport basis.

I put Don Shula at 15 and Noll at 5. Even though Pat Summitt is a great coach at her sport how she ranks 11 on this list in a field is beyonds me. Maybe have a secondary list of great coaches in secondary sports like soccer women’s sports and all the other irrelevant sports out there. Everybody here knows my opinion on #41 Tony “Juice” LaRussa. The biggest * in the game.
