Associated Press March 15 2009Bill Davidson the Detroit Pistons’ Hall of Fame owner and noted philanthropist died late Friday at his home in Bloomfield Hills Mich. The cause of death wasn’t released but Davidson had been in poor health in recent years and used a wheelchair.

The Sports Authority is scheduled to start selling its athletic equipment and gear on March 27 with a grand opening April 4 and Nordstrom Rack will likely open in May said Marie McKenzie East Palo Alto’s redevelopment project manager. Both stores will be part of East Palo Alto’s Ravenswood 101 Retail Center off Highway 101 and University Avenue. Businesses located in East Palo Alto’s redevelopment districts must hire city residents for at least 30 percent of available jobs per a city ordinance McKenzie said. Some businesses such as Ikea have done much better with East Palo Alto residents making up an average of 35 to 38 percent of staff according to McKenzie. Ryan Souza the store manager at Sports Authority said he hired between 50 and 60 sales associates about 40 percent of whom call East Palo Alto home.

Jim Renacci the vice chairman of the AFL executive committee said the new labor agreement is just one step toward getting back on the field in 2010. The league also plans to restructure into a single entity ownership model and work out a deal with ESPN which invested in the league and owned broadcast and internet rights. Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth hit and killed a 59-year-old pedestrian with his Bentley on a busy causeway linking Miami and Miami Beach police said. Stallworth 28 was cooperating and no charges have been filed.

Street ticket vendors are only one segment of the sports world being hurt by the sinking economy. Minnesota’s pro teams and the U of M Gophers feel the pinch just like everybody else. As sponsorship revenue flattens and suite sales stall they fear the worst is yet to come.
Sport-fishing quotas for coho will be higher this summer

At a meeting Thursday in Sea-Tac the Pacific Fishery Management Council came up with three options to consider for coastal sport salmon fisheries. “The coho numbers look very good and the fish will definitely be there in the ocean when it opens up” said Doug Milward a state Fish and Wildlife salmon resource manager. The option one sport quota is 189000 hatchery coho and 38000 chinook. Ilwaco and Westport anglers will be allowed to keep only hatchery-marked chinook (those with a missing adipose fin) while anglers off La Push and Neah Bay can keep marked and unmarked chinook.
