Sanders fires back at Funkhouser over plan to slash sports complex …
Kansas City Star
If the city money goes away it’s possible (even likely) that the Chiefs and Royals would claim the local governments have broken their agreement to come up with enough money to maintain the stadiums. And that would open up the 25-year agreements with the Chiefs and Royals to new negotiations. But based on my conversations over the years with Missouri officials here’s another problem that could arise for Funkhouser’s idea:The state — which pumps several million into the sports complex maintenance fund — also spends a few million a year on Bartle Hall. The state could simply kill the Bartle Hall funding and switch it over to the sports complex to make sure the high-profile sports teams stay in KC and don’t get to negotiate new leases that might be more onerous on local taxpayers. That would open up a $2 million hole in Bartle Hall funding for the city to suddenly try to replace. UPDATE: And another scenario — more positive for Funkhouser — is that the state of Missouri ought to be sending more money to KC than it does now.
