The sport — something resembling shuffleboard on ice — has found a peculiar niche among American sports fans who turn to it every four years at the Winter Games. “I think people do see it as something of an everyman’s sport” said Nina Reiniger a Harvard grad longtime curler and a member on one of 10 teams trying to earn a trip to Vancouver. “I don’t think the interest has waned since two lympics ago back in 2002. Superintendent Bob Nuñez will recommend to the school board Monday cutting $2 million from athletics by reducing athletic directors charging students $100 each year to play and eliminating transportation to away games. The one big casualty: water sports — but all other sports programs would be spared. To avoid further cuts students and parents will have to raise nearly $1. 7 million by selling coupon books sports memorabilia and tickets to the San Jose Earthquakes soccer and akland Raiders football games. “I believe we are going to have an athletic plan the question is what it will look like. It definitely will not look like this year” Nuñez said.

Leaders of Borgata sports betting ring get 5 years

- The top two leaders of an illegalsports betting ring that operated in a poker room at an AtlanticCity casino have been sentenced to five years in prison. Six others got lesser sentences Friday for their participationin the ring which was based inside the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spapoker room. The casino was not involved in any wrongdoing. Fifty-one-year-old Jack Buscemi Jr. of Mullica Hill pleadedguilty in December to conspiracy to commit money laundering.
