Baseball softball rugby sevens squash and karate also sent in their documents by this week’s deadline providing answers to 80 questions the IC said Thursday. The seven sports are competing for a maximum of two openings on the 2016 program. The decision will be made in ctober at the IC session in Copenhagen where the 2016 lympic host city will also be selected from Chicago Tokyo Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. The IC program commission will evaluate the sports federations’ documents and submit a preliminary report to the executive board in June.

Beginning with the longtime problem sport of football schools and conferences were handed what author and activist Richard Lapchick called “the worst report card for college sport in many years” by the Central Florida-based Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport. The Lapchick-led organization annually assesses hiring trends in all college and pro sports. It gave colleges a C-plus in the number of minorities filling positions ranging from coach to athletics director to university president and a B for the number of women. Those grades are down from B-minus and B-plus respectively a year earlier. “The numbers reflect a need for new strategies for more opportunities for people of color and women” Lapchick said.

The lads pulled up folding chairs and leaned back to watch a mandatory training video. Popcorn was not served. Neither were Tic Tacs. The video was not one of those gruesome medical films that soldiers used to be shown in basic training but rather a seminar on the Yankee way of doing things including how to conduct an interview with the news media.
