Samurai archery an ancient sport still thrives

The bow is taller than the person shooting it and to the uninitiated it appears lopsided and unbalanced. There are no sights no high-tech stabilizers. And of course it is done on horseback at upward of 40 mph. It’s called yabusame and it is the sport of the samurai.

The Bruins entered the contest with wins in 10 straight games and a 14-game home winning streak. Boston hadn't lost since a 3-1 setback at Washington on December 10 and was last beaten at the Garden by Toronto on ctober 23. Buffalo however opened a 2-0 lead in the first period and never trailed in capturing its second straight win. Thomas Vanek and Paul Gaustad also scored for the Sabres while Ryan Miller made 29 saves in the victory.

The pole-vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva took the top honor as sportswoman of the year and Spain’s soccer team was voted team of the year for winning the European Championship. In a poll by the International Sports Press Association journalists from 96 nations gave Bolt 1673 points; Phelps received 1557. Bolt won three gold medals in Beijing setting world records in the 100 meters the 200 and the 4×100 relay to become the star of the Bird’s Nest stadium. In the Water Cube Phelps made history by winning eight gold medals in the pool for the United States. Isinbayeva was undefeated outdoors in 2008 defending her lympic title in Beijing with one of her four world records in the year. The Spanish soccer team earned 1395 points ahead of Jamaica’s sprint relay team; Manchester United the Champions League winner; and the United States lympic basketball team.
