Sports economy readies for a test
San Francisco Chronicle, USA
Granted, that’s all speculative, and major-league athletes needn’t worry about their incomes crashing to the levels of primary-care physicians, public-interest attorneys or Supreme Court justices. But ticket buyers are expected to diminish, and as much as sponsors might want to capitalize on a possible attendant growth in TV audience, they might be handcuffed by limited budgets or political considerations. Any company that has asked for government assistance or laid off employees will have a hard time explaining its pricey association with a sports team. Citigroup said Monday it wouldn’t back out of its deal with the Mets, whose new ballpark will be called Citi Field at a cost of $400 million. The bank had essentially been nationalized the day before, and the CEO announced last week that more than 50,000 employees would be thrown out of work. How much capital has been squandered on naming rights over the last 20 years? These deals rarely made much sense. Do fans of the Bulls, Jazz and Suns really look past schedule and price when buying airplane tickets, and fall back on sentimental attachments to the United Center (Chicago), Delta Center (Salt Lake) and US Airways Center (Phoenix)? Those naming rights must be an enormous source of pride that only insiders can understand – especially the employees who saw their pension plans gutted when US Airways and United declared bankruptcy.
Intramural sports offer as many memories as school sports
Seattle Times, United States
To me, it’s a sign of vitality if a school offers intramural basketball for boys and girls. Sadly, my best estimate is that no more than 15 percent of schools offer it. That’s a shame because nothing is more fun to play than basketball and no other sport lends itself as well to intramurals. I realize that gyms are booked full with school teams but hats off to the schools that find a way to make intramurals work. I saw it done at Lake Washington High School in the late 1990s when Roger Hansen was athletic director and my oldest son, Stuart, was there. Out of curiosity, I went to one of his games. He was on a team whose starters were fellow football players or guys cut from the basketball program.
