right to host the 2010 World Cup. Indeed, the IOA?s decision
should ideally spell the beginning of the end of the ?president for
life? culture that pervades Indian sports bodies. The IOA?s decision
could be seen as a signal for other sports bodies where things are pretty messy,
to put structures in place and make themselves more accountable. That said, the
problems with the IHF is indicative of the larger shortcomings of democratic
functioning in such bodies in India, spurred not least by the system of
political appointees in sports federations.
