minutes to earn his 12th career ATP singles title and first of 2008. Nadal, seeded second this week, lost in the final of this event for the second
time in his career. He also fell to Roger Federer in the 2005 title match. After a trade of early breaks, Davydenko staved off two break-point chances to
hold serve in the sixth game of the match, then broke at love in the following
game to grab a 4-3 lead.

– Stanford baseball coach Mark Marquess earned his 1,300th career victory when the Cardinal defeated top-ranked Arizona State 10-2 on Sunday. Marquess, in his 32nd year at Stanford, moved into a tie for 13th place on the NCAA list for all divisions with Fresno State’s Bob Bennett, who won 1,300 games in 34 years. Marquess and Bennett are tied for 10th among Division I coaches. The 61-year-old Marquess is 1,300-654-5 and has led the Cardinal to the College World Series 13 times, including consecutive national titles in 1987-88. “It’s nice,” Marquess said of the milestone.

Jackson has been spending a lot of time talking to Joba Chamberlain, trying to help the 22-year-old prepare for his setup role, and Chamberlain came up big that night. Jackson also threw a perfect strike on the ceremonial first pitch, and then talked about how George Steinbrenner should join him in the Hall of Fame. He also got a special autograph for himself that evening. After the Yankees' 3-2 victory over the Blue Jays, the man who always is signing autographs reached into his pocket and showed The Post's Kevin Kernan a baseball that had Henry Kissinger's autograph.
