Michael Grade confident football holds winning formula for ITV

The corporation had certainlywrong-footed sports rights observers with the surprise acquisition of thesport in a five-year, £200 million deal. Formula One, the jewel in Michael Grade’s ITV Sport crown weeks ago,attracting millions to witness Lewis Hamilton’s challenge for the worldtitle, was apparently now a worthless bauble. But Grade confirmed Walker’ssuspicions when the results of a sealed bid for live Wednesday nightChampions League football matches were released at 7pm by Uefa’s marketingagents. ITV has secured first pick of 17 matches, including the final, in athree-year agreement costing the broadcaster about £160 million. It was a deal that advertisers said was vital for ITV’s short-term future.

These are the sentiments of local female sports administrator Eugenia Chidhakwa who recently attended the 4th International Olympic Committee World Conference on Women and Sport, which was held in Dead Sea, Jordan. Chidhakwa said yesterday that she learnt a lot of things during the Jordan conference, most importantly the role that women are supposed to play in sports administration. "What I learnt during the conference in Jordan is that women in sport can be a very important tool as we have a very crucial role to play both in increasing the number of athletes and helping in shaping their future.

The German politician, who on Tuesday was appointed the UN’s new Special Representative for Sports and Development, will visit China “as soon as possible” to evaluate the situation related to the unrest in Tibet. A week of protests against China’s 57-year rule of the region erupted into rioting in Lhasa last Friday.

The 17-year-old Highlands College student retained his double junior world title in October 2007. It is the second time the teenager, who is also a top bodyboarder and was crowned British Under-18 bodyboard champion, has picked up the top award. The prestigious Sid Guy Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to sport went to veteran shooter Bob Blake. Blake has been largely responsible for Jersey’s incredible haul of Island Games shooting medals over the years, not only as a talented competitor but as an administrator in all levels of the sport.
