Battle of the bulge over school sports cuts
The Age – Feb 11, 2008
PHYSICAL education academics have leapt from the blocks todefend school sport from a move by primary principals to drop it asa key learning area. They say it should be given the same weight in the curriculum asliteracy and numeracy. In an effort to de-clutter the curriculum, the AustralianPrimary Principals Association last year said that “add-on”subjects such as sport and music should be lower priorities. But Victoria University sports ethicist Dennis Hemphill saysthat approach fails to recognise that there is more to sport thanexercise. It also teaches students to learn skills such as problemsolving, teamwork and tactics – all of which could be applied tolife beyond school.

Saturday Night before Navy Coach Billy Lange added another name to the list. Lange was watching a tape of the Lions’ basketball team, admiring Baumann’s intensity, and could not resist calling Columbia Coach Joe Jones multiple times. With each call, Lange grew more excited. Skip to next paragraph.

Kohestani arrived too late for most of the soccer season, playing in only the last game. For her winter sport, she chose basketball, which she had never played, and is a member of a struggling junior varsity squad. She stands apart from her teammates not only for the sweat pants and long sleeves she wears under her uniform, but also by the intensity she brings to the court. “In the first two or three days, she traveled almost every time she caught the ball, and I'd have to stop and she'd get very frustrated and angry because she is so competitive,” said Ryan Spring, the basketball coach and a history teacher.

My Sport: Sir Richard Hadlee
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 11, 2008
We all learnt to pick up a ball and throw it early on in life. My first memory of a major sporting event was my dad, Walter, who had captained New Zealand in Test cricket and was retired, coming back to play for Canterbury against Fiji in about 1960 in an exhibition match. In the first innings he got a standing ovation on the way out, got out for nought and got a standing ovation all the way back to the pavilion.

Press-Enterprise – Feb 11, 2008
- With the addition of Pau Gasol, who has shown to be a terrific passer, and with the way Kobe Bryant has been dishing the basketball, Lamar Odom knew it was time to change some things in his game. Precisely, cutting without the basketball, something Odom admitted that it was a "weakness in my game. " It’s obvious Odom has been making an effort to move his body and cut without the ball. Odom finished with just eight points on 4-for-6 shooting, but he showed how willing he is to improve his game. "Me and the coaching staff, we talked about it," Odom said.
