    Americans love high-profile athletic events, as the current buildup to Super Bowl XLII illustrates. But nobody hangs America's future upon sports. In Africa, though, it's quite common to do so. In a continent ravaged by political and ethnic violence, people often invoke sports – especially soccer – as force for national unity. And nobody does so more than the Ghanaians, who are hosts of the 16-country Africa Cup of Nations tournament at four sites around the country.

    (THE HOME FORUM) Byline: Diana Federman “I don’t usually read the wrestling news,” my friend said on the phone, “but I saw your name in the paper. ” Or, more precisely, my son’s name. He was in the headlines after winning a high school heavyweight championship in our part of the state. Time was I didn’t read the wrestling news, either. As the mother of two sons, I was no stranger to sports: Soccer, baseball, football, and lacrosse gear have littered our lawn.
