The Patriots were the heavy favorite, having finished the regular season as the second undefeated team in NFL history, going 16-0. Yet the Giants went down to the Super Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. and pulled the upset, winning 17-14. Only history will say where the Giants’ win will rank in history.

The CBC will apply to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission this week for approval to start a digital channel that would air mostly amateur sport. "They may have a tough time getting that approved," one TV source said. "If you take what the CRTC says, that digital channels intending to compete with existing ones are not approved, well, clearly they want to compete. "The proposed CBC channel would consist mainly of amateur and high-performance sports content, although there is no longer a clear line between amateur and professional sports.

A Super Bowl win for the New England Patriots on Sunday would set up a big-league conflict between politics and sports in a city that is obsessed with both: The victory parade would have to be on Super Tuesday, when Massachusetts votes with 23 other states in critical Democratic and Republican presidential primaries. The players would not be able to get back from Phoenix early enough for a Monday parade. And a number of Patriots have to travel to Hawaii on Wednesday for the Feb.
