TORONTO – Chris Bosh had 38 points and 14 rebounds, and the Toronto Raptors beat Portland 116-109 in double overtime Sunday to hand the Trail Blazers their second loss in 19 games. Bosh, who played 55 minutes, scored six points in the second overtime to lead Toronto to its third straight victory. Brandon Roy had a career-high 33 points and 10 assists for Portland, and made a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in the first overtime that tied the game 104-104. Anthony Parker finished with 25 points for Toronto and Jose Calderón added 22 points and 10 assists to help the Raptors recover after blowing a six-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation. Two free throws by Bosh gave Toronto a 93-89 edge with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but Jamario Moon fouled Travis Outlaw on a 3-pointer and Outlaw converted from the line, tying it at 93 with 16.

But there is a limit, a point at which on-camera antics,off-field controversies and endless public debate clouds the realthing — the sport. In the wake of cricket’s monkey business, and with theAustralian Open tennis about to begin, it is time that oursportsmen and women got back to basics. Why do we pay more than$100 a ticket to watch second-week tennis at Rod Laver? Why do ourchildren put posters of our stars on their walls? Why do we, as anation, find collective pride and joy in the narrative of sport? The answer is not because we enjoy seeing sports stars slagging offat each other, the umpires and anyone who dares criticise them inthe media. The answer is much purer: it is their skill and determination.

I tell him I saw some people with pizza, but I wouldn’t risk it. “Did you see the movie?” I ask him. “Oh, yeah,” he says. We had to watch a movie.

The eyes in the sky are a boon to sports fans

Instead of hoping your spouse will get bored with football (American or “soccer”) and shut off the TV, you might consider learning to like the games instead. Thanks to the new sports information system developed by SportVU, sports fans just got a lot more stuff to watch and talk about.
