For a few weeks the world was under the impression that the Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer had been murdered over a mere cricket match. That stirred up horrific memories of Andrés Escobar the Colombian defender who was gunned down in his home country just 10 days after scoring a critical own goal during a loss to the United States in the 1994 soccer World Cup. The timing of Woolmer's death was even more dramatic coming the morning after the Pakistanis had been on the wrong end of one of the biggest upsets in their sport's history during the cricket World Cup in the Caribbean last March. Woolmer was found unconscious in his Kingston hotel room and soon pronounced dead.

The school also is awaiting word from the NCAA after itself-reported an academic scandal involving two dozen athletes thatresulted in two employees being fired this past summer. During Hart’s tenure success in high-revenue sports likefootball has dropped off while several other programs namely men’strack and women’s soccer flourished. Hart also had mixed success with his coaching hires. ChrisGobrecht left after just one year as the women’s basketball coachand her contractual situation wound up in litigation. SteveRobinson was fired after five mediocre seasons as the men’sbasketball coach and the program reached postseason play only onceduring Hart’s tenure.
