The outcome of one of the most tightly contested exciting and historic seasons may be decided not on the track in the final four races but at a hearing here Thursday at the International Automobile Federation or FIA. The World Motor Sport Council will examine for the second time this year whether the leading team McLaren Mercedes used documents that its technical director obtained from its rival Ferrari to improve its own car. In July the team was found guilty of possessing the information but it was not punished as it could not be proved that it had used the information. If new evidence that has been obtained by the FIA proves that McLaren gained an advantage from this material the team could be kicked out of both the 2007 and 2008 championships. That would end the fairytale ride and breakthrough of the championship leader Lewis Hamilton the first driver of African descent to race in the sport… ” Nick Heidfeld a driver at the BMW Sauber team said that not only was he not worried but also if it turned out that a team had cheated then the team should be penalized. Heidfeld would move from fifth to third in the drivers' series if the two McLaren drivers were eliminated. Others more closely involved with the business of the sport worry that sponsors like banks and technology companies will not want to be associated with a sport where talk of dishonesty and cheating and bad ethics overshadow the sport. “I have a bit of a concern that if it goes on much longer it doesn't deter people who are sponsors in F1 or those who are close to coming in” said Frank Williams the owner of the Williams team. At a time when professional sports are awash with scandals however others are more cautious about the potential negative effects to Formula One. This scandal cannot be compared to doping for instance as the latter affects the physical limits of the human body and the moral question of encouraging young people to enhance their results even outside professional sport.
