The Sevilla teammates of Antonio Puerta the soccer professional whose heart stopped during play Saturday and who died Tuesday are preparing for the Super Cup against AC Milan in Monaco on Friday evening. The match is mainly for profit and prestige but Sevilla's players agreed to take part as a tribute to their departed colleague. Puerta was not alone this week this month or in history in embodying the paradox that sports is meant for the fittest yet people sometimes die doing it.

07 12:00 AM ETTHURSDAY Aug. 30 (HealthDay News) — Many children today startspecializing in one sport early — playing year-round joiningcompetitive club or travel teams and participating in specialtraining programs — believing they’ll put themselves on thefast track to college scholarships or maybe even a pro sportscareer. But for too many of these kids that fast track leads straightto injuries sometimes serious ones. Recent research suggests that as many as four in 10 emergencyroom visits for children between 5 and 14 years old are forsports-related injuries. No single sport is specifically to blame for the increase inkids' sports injuries. Instead experts suspect that choosingto play one sport all the time or playing several sports all atonce are factors leading to what are called overuse injuries.

They welcomed the chance for their Seattle Mariners to take over the AL West lead or at least make a statement about their legitimacy as contenders. Instead they watched the division-leading Los Angeles Angels conclusively demonstrate their superiority. The margin in the standings widened to five games with the Angels’ three-game sweep completed Wednesday with an 8-2 victory. The psychological gap might be harder to measure but it has certainly grown.

to constitute sports commission Principal Correspondent THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar said that State Government will constitute a sports commission next month to draft a sports policy which will be in tune with the times. He was speaking after inaugurating the one-day seminar on broad basing sports in Kerala and evolving a strategy conducted by the Kerala State Sports Council in connection with the National Sports Day celebrations here on Wednesday. The Minister said that the Government will make sports a part of school curriculum once the curriculum committees submits its report. He also said that necessary amendments would be made to the Kerala Sports Act 2000 passed by the previous LDF Government.
