The Cards defeated the Chicago Cubs 6-4 in Wrigley Field Monday to avoid a sweep in their waterlogged series and complete a crucial road trip with a 4-2 record to re-establish themselves in the NL Central Division race. Louis heads home three games behind the Cubs whose lead in the NL Central slipped to a half-game over Milwaukee pending the Brewers’ game against Arizona Monday night.

While fans of other teams might argue the showcase has become too Nebraska-centric Texas coach Jerritt Elliott believes taking advantage of the Huskers’ drawing power in Omaha makes sense for the sport. “Nebraska is one of the premier programs” Elliott said. “As long as Nebraska is at the top and they’re drawing 17000 fans Omaha is a worthwhile place to be able to watch the sport. If Nebraska can guarantee that kind of attendance whether they’re in it or not it’s the place. From 1995 through 2004 the AVCA Showcase was the only game in town on the opening weekend of the season. But in 2005 at the urging of some coaches and conferences the NCAA approved legislation that allowed all teams to start the season on the same weekend. Now the tournament must compete with matches from other areas of the country for participants as well as exposure.

It was the last Newcastle United match before the 1955 Cup final. Everyone got a voucher which went into a hat and my dad won a Cup final ticket for Newcastle v Man City at Wembley. I stayed home and watched it on TV and vowed that the next time Newcastle were at Wembley we would all go.
