To avoid scandals ACC performs background checks on refs – College…
    ESPN – Jul 24, 2007
The dominant issue was the background checks which Swoffordsaid were approved by university presidents two years ago and beganlast year on officials in football and men’s and women’sbasketball. “It’s not a catchall end-all by any means but it does show aproactive way of looking at this and hopefully raising red flags ifthere are any to be raised” Swofford said. About 75 of the roughly 225 officials in those sports will beinvestigated each year and every official’s background will bechecked once in a four-year period said Shane Lyons the league’sassociate commissioner for compliance. Swofford said the ACC and Big Ten are the only conferences toimplement the checks which cost $135 apiece. The ACC-ordered probes performed by an independent agencyinclude an investigation into any ties to gambling on sportsofficials’ credit histories and criminal and driving records at thelocal state and federal levels. The NCAA performs similar checkson officials working its basketball tournaments and bowl games hesaid. None of the officials investigated showed any warning signs thatmight have led to a removal from officiating games Lyons said.

Britain to consider criminalizing doping in sports
    International Herald Tribune – Jul 24, 2007
The issue will be the focus of an anti-doping commission set up Tuesday by the British Olympic Association in the first major review of drug-testing rules in Britain. The six-member panel will also examine the rule introduced in 1992 that automatically bans any British athlete who has a drug offense from competing in any future Olympics. Creation of an independent anti-doping agency along the lines of bodies set up in the United States and Australia will also be considered. BOA chairman Colin Moynihan said criminalizing doping for athletes and suppliers was a delicate issue.

It was part of our social life. I was about six then and I had no interest in cycling whatsoever. I had my first race at 13 a local time trial. Sports watched: I tend not to follow sport.
