German public sports financing in jeopardy after cycling scandal

A day after two public broadcasters pulled the plug on live television coverage of the Tour de France over the latest scandal corporate sponsors of cycling teams in Germany said they were re-evaluating their commitment to the sport. But those qualms did not deter the largest private German broadcaster ProSiebenSat. 1 which quickly bought the television rights and started its own live coverage of cycling's signature event Thursday afternoon. The aftershocks about the doping results were particularly profound in Germany because the 26-year-old T-Mobile rider Patrik Sinkewitz represented a younger generation of cyclists that team sponsors organizers and broadcasters hoped would make a clean break with a past tainted by drug use.

There’s a Jordan bracket there’s Ali Babe has one and then there’s Billie Jean King. In looking at the icons named for each bracket I thought of how cool it was for them to include BJK have a bracket named after her in recognition of her contribution to women in sports and sports in general. Then it hit me: Of the four athletes who have brackets King was the least dominant in her sport. So why’d they choose her? Then it hit me again: If this thing is based on dominance (not that ESPN ever said it was) Jordan Ruth and Ali are not as dominant in their sports as the three top women athletes have been in theirs.

The Houston Rockets’ star was faulted for taking too much time off to recover from his last NBA season. The government’s All-China Sports Federation also said he spent too much time planning his wedding and making appearances for the Special Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. “No matter how lofty public welfare activities are they can’t be allowed to take first place in a player’s life” the China Sports Daily a federation-owned newspaper said in an article Tuesday. “No matter how sweet personal life is it can’t be compared to the exultation of capturing glory for one’s nation” the article said.
