Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO Tony George and Formula One Management CEO Bernie Ecclestone could not reach an agreement on a contract extension ending the circuit’s eight-year run at the famous track. “After several discussions Bernie Ecclestone and I were unable to agree how to keep Formula One in Indianapolis for the near term” said George in a statement Thursday. “However we have agreed to leave the door open for a potential future date. “It has been a pleasure having the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis and I hope that as we approach our Centennial Era at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway an opportunity might present itself that would allow its return.

– The North Carolina State Bar on Thursday issued a formal order disbarring former district attorney Mike Nifong for his handling of the now-discredited Duke lacrosse rape case. Nifong must surrender his law license to the bar no later than30 days from when he is served with the order. He also must paycosts associated with his June ethics trial. A disciplinary hearing committee decided to disbar Nifong afterfinding he had committed at least two dozen violations of thestate’s rules of professional conduct. The violations includedlying to the court and withholding DNA evidence that showed geneticmaterial from several males — though none from a Duke lacrosseplayer — had been found on the accuser.

But these days the American model is gaining adherents in Europe. Sports ministers in many countries are arguing that football needs to be exempted from competition law in order to allow governing bodies to equalise the resources of clubs without risking prosecution. The European Commission’s strategy paper on sport published on July 11th ignored those calls; but the pressure will not go away. Professional sport differs from other businesses in one important respect.
