The court endorsed rules to prevent “hard-sell tactics” in sports and to curtail valuing athletics over academics. The decision buttressed groups nationwide that oversee interscholastic sports. Writing for the court Justice John Paul Stevens emphasized that school and other government-related entities may not broadly curtail free speech but may enforce for example “conditions … that are necessary to managing an efficient and effective state-sponsored high school athletic league. “The case dates to 1997 when Brentwood Academy football coach Carlton Flatt wrote to 12 eighth-grade boys admitted to the private school for the fall inviting them to spring practice.

The top-seeded Federer is again the overwhelming favorite on the hallowed grass courts of the London suburb and will open his fortnight against Russia’s Teimuraz Gabashvili. Gabashvili has never played at Wimbledon and his first two ventures into Grand Slam play this year ended with first-round losses at both the Australian and French pens. Federer is trying to become the first man to win five straight Wimbledon crowns since the great Bjorn Borg accomplished the feat from 1976-80. His opening match next week will be his first on grass this year as the Swiss star did not play any of the Wimbledon tuneup events.
