Mickelson got up-and-down for birdie on the par-5 17th and shot 2-under 69 in the steamy sunshine at Riviera giving him a one-shot lead over Padraig Harrington (70) as Mickelson tries to win for the second straight week. Mickelson was at 13-under 200. He will be in the final group with Harrington and Rich Beem who made a hole-in-one on the 14th hole that sent him leaping atop the red sports car that he won. Beem who used a a 7-iron from 179 yards for the ace shot the best round of the day a 65 that left him two shots behind.

– University of Wyoming athletics directorTom Burman is crafting a plan to make UW more competitive in theMountain West Conference by improving both recruiting andscheduling. In the last 10 years only men’s basketball has won a conferencechampionship. Burman said he is creating a Competitive Excellence Plan that”will guide our decision-making process during the next fewyears. The plan will cost an estimated $800000. Burman said he hopes to get $400000 from the WyomingLegislature and match that with self-generated funds likedonations ticket sales media contracts and merchandising.

- It reminded race fans of something Dale Earnhardt would have done. n Sunday Kevin Harvick made some moves that would have made his predecessor proud — charging forward from seventh place with two laps to go and passing Mark Martin in the final corner to win one of the wildest Daytona 500s ever. Harvick got the biggest victory of his career driving the flagship car at Richard Childress Racing a position long held by the late Earnhardt. The victory came six years to the day after Earnhardt lost his life at Daytona while driving Childress’ No. 3 Chevy which was re-numbered 29 when Harvick took over. Story continues below.

Clijsters has said this will be her last year of competitive tennis and she was hoping to go out a winner in her native country but the top-seeded Mauresmo earned a 6-4 7-6 (7-4) triumph on Sunday. Not only did Mauresmo capture the first-place check of $88265 but she also claimed a diamond-studded racket worth about $1. The extra prize was to be awarded for any player claiming three titles in a five-year span.

– The University of Arkansas Board ofTrustees wants to review the relationship between athletic boostersand the system’s athletic departments after the wide circulation ofdisparaging e-mails aimed at former Arkansas quarterback MitchMustain. At a meeting Saturday board member Dr. Carl Johnson suggestedthe trustees study such relationships after booster Teresa Prewettsent the e-mails. Prewett has since been banned from the sidelinesby Coach Houston Nutt. “I just think as an overseer of the whole university it’s ourduty to look at what’s in place” Johnson said.
