The man possessed shoulders as wide as a hitching post broad enough to where his entire name Tank Johnson fit on his Bears jersey. His arms were etched with faint tattoos stretched to near distortion by gathering muscle. His eyes were hidden behind dark Nike shades and his baby dreadlocks spiraled from his skull cap. His body mass created breathing room as cameras and recorders orbited him like satellites.

Critics question whether the American pro leagues truly are intent on rooting out HGH thought to be widely abused because no one currently is testing for it. But MLB and NFL officials say they are stymied by players union contracts that prohibit taking blood from players and they cite privacy concerns and doubts about the accuracy of blood tests. The two leagues recently awarded grants worth a combined $1 million (€770000) to develop a urine test but even the scientist who received most of the research money concedes an effective urine screen is years away meaning players can continue using HGH with little fear of getting caught. “It’s a difficult proposition” said Don Catlin chief of the lympic Analytical Laboratory at UCLA.
