com news servicesRLAND Fla. McKenzie associate managing editor for sports at the rlando Sentinel and one of the most influential figures in sports journalism died Friday. He died at home in Heathrow after a three-year battle with cancer the newspaper said. “We’ve lost a towering editor and a dear friend” Sentinel editor Charlotte Hall said. “Van had vision creativity and a passion for life… People wanted to work for him because he brought out their best. McKenzie began his career with the cala (Fla. ) Star-Banner in 1963 and became sports editor at age 17. He went on to lead sports departments of the Sentinel — twice — Cocoa Today (now Florida Today) St. Petersburg Times New York Daily News Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The National and was president of Associated Press Sports Editors the national association of newspaper sports editors in 1982-83. “Van had the best story instinct of any sports editor I’ve ever known” said Dave Kindred an author and columnist who worked with McKenzie in Atlanta and at The National the first nationwide sports daily in the United States. More than 30 people who worked with him later went on to be sports editors in places such as Los Angeles Chicago Atlanta St.
