– The state attorney general’s office agreedSaturday to take over the sexual assault case against three DukeUniversity lacrosse players at the request of the embattleddistrict attorney. Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong hamstrung by aflip-flopping witness and dogged by allegations that he madeinflammatory statements to the media asked Attorney General RoyCooper’s office Friday to appoint a special prosecutor. “I wish I could tell you this case would be resolved quickly. Since we have not beeninvolved in the investigation and prosecution all of theinformation will be new to our office. Any case with such seriouscriminal charges will require careful review.

The WNBA All-Star game is returning to Washington for the first time since 2002 and this time the league hopes the event will provide a boost for a team that has lost fans since baseball returned to the nation’s capital. The league announced Tuesday that its midseason showcase will be played at the Verizon Center on July 15 and will be broadcast live on ABC. The top-seeded Sharapova a two-time Grand Slam champion will battle her fellow Russian Anastassia Rodionova. The 19-year-old Sharapova struggled in her opening match here on Tuesday when France’s Camille Pin pushed her to 9-7 in the third set amid stifling 100-plus-degree temperatures at Melbourne Park. Sharapova reached the semifinals here in each of the last two years.
