    State of the sport
    ESPN – Dec 29, 2006
com exclusiveWhat defines a “sport”? Is it the athletes? The competition? The playing field? The fans? After watching the Bassmaster American Sunday night at 6:00 PM Central Standard Time (is that prime time?) I think we are working on getting all these things wrapped up in the “sport” of bass fishing. What defines an “athlete”? Dictionary. com defines an athlete as “A person possessing the natural or acquired traits such as strength agility and endurance that are necessary for physical exercise or sports especially those performed in competitive contexts. Don’t let anyone tell you that standing on the front deck of a boat for 14 hours in 100-degree heat or 30-degree cold doesn’t require some agility and endurance. Casting a bait thousands of times a day often times at precise targets is not a skill that every person on the planet is born with.

    Celebrating life with sport
    Hindu – Dec 29, 2006
PHT: AFP Sport is a celebration of life. As such Indian sport in 2006 — and sport in general — had a lot to celebrate and of course ruminate too. Through sheer grit and determination Indian sportspersons have excelled in the International arena showing the world what they are capable of. At the same time a couple of legendary sportsmen who dominated their respective fields bid adieu causing fans to wonder if they would ever see the likes of them ever. Indian sports also saw the demise of senior cricketers who graced the sport with raw passion and purpose.

    Providence Journal – Dec 29, 2006
There were some shining moments for which it can be extremely proud — the wonderful display of sportsmanship during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for example when UCLA basketball players Arron Afflalo and Ryan Hollins stepped away from their team’s jubilant celebration on the court to console visibly distraught Gonzaga forward Adam Morrison. And who can forget the heartwarming story of Jason McElwain the 17-year-old with autism from Rochester N. ? After serving faithfully for four years as team manager of the Greece Athena High School boys basketball team the senior not only was allowed to suit up for the final home game of the season he played the final four minutes.
