He wound up second at the Western then won his next six starts. There are hundreds of players _ good ones too _ who don’t win six tournaments in an entire career let alone one season. To go 6-for-6 well only Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan know what that’s like.

juniors 6-3By Kevin AllenUSA TDAY Even with the USA losing its first two games at the world junior championships coach Ron Rolston is telling his players they control their fate in the tournament. If the USA defeats Slovakia on Saturday and Sweden on Sunday it will qualify for the medal round. If they lose one they likely won’t advance. So let’s ignore McGwire and consider the honorable candidates if I only had a vote. As a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America I once had a Cooperstown vote.

In a year we'll find out exactly how good this UCLA team was. Wrapping up his fourth season in Westwood Karl Dorrell led the Bruins to a 7-6 campaign that was both better and worse than that mark indicated. The Bruins were a play away from winning at Notre Dame and finally toppled USC but also had bad losses to the Washington schools on their resume this season. They played much of the season with their backup quarterback and relied on a defense that was among the most improved in the nation.
