The Daily Telegraph can reveal Deidre Anderson is the guru who counselled Australia’s greatest swimmer through one of the toughest periods of his life. Ms Anderson was also instrumental in guiding Cathy Freeman into retirement. Without naming her 24-year-old Thorpe announced yesterday that Ms Anderson had been the person who had helped make his decision to quit easier. A relaxed and obviously happy Thorpe stunned the swimming community and the nation with his decision but said he was incredibly excited about his future.

– A Confederate heritage group plans tochallenge the NCAA’s ban on championship events in South Carolinaas long as the Confederate flag flies on the grounds of the statecapitol. The NCAA in 2001 barred any of its postseason tournaments fromSouth Carolina. The organization is considering a request from theBlack Coaches Association to extend the ban to sports where teamsearn a chance to host playoff games like baseball or football. The NCAA has “no business getting involved in the politics ofthis or any other state” Randy Burbage commander of the SouthCarolina division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans saidWednesday. “The NCAA should stick to sports — something theyshould know something about — and stay out of politics in SouthCarolina.

If Maryland wins BC would be in the ACC title game against Georgia Tech. A win there puts BC in the range Bowl. A loss and the Eagles will probably wind up in the Champs Sports Bowl against Purdue but could drop as far as the Music City Bowl in Nashville. If Wake Forest wins BC could go to the Champs Sports Bowl in rlando on Dec.
