    New York Times – Oct 25, 2006
toolsContainer –>. toolsRight –>By JHN HANC Published: ctober 25 2006 NASCAR’S Car of Tomorrow — the pompously named new ”base” model that will be introduced in 16 races in the sport’s marquee Nextel Cup series in 2007 — could be one of the most significant developments in stock-car racing since moonshine-hauling drivers stopped trying to outrun revenue agents and started driving in circles. It could also be a huge miscalculation on Nascar’s part — or just a tweaking that most fans won’t even notice in the heat of their Talladega Nights and Daytona Days. Proponents of the new car say that its design — boxier possibly a tad slower but adorned with important new features — will create a more even playing field; that it will promote closer and more exciting races; and that it will highlight the skills of the drivers while keeping them safe. Critics say it’s a boondoggle a waste of time and money; one even compared it to the introduction of New Coke in the 1980’s a classic case of trying to fix something that wasn’t broken. Either way the stakes are high.
