The previous four teams to do that over the last 66 years went on to lose the series: the Tigers in 1940 (at Cincinnati) the Cubs in 1945 (at Detroit) the Brewers in 1982 (at St. Louis) and the Braves in 1996 (at New York). But how’s this for a favorable omen for St. Louis? The last team to win Game 1 of the World Series on the road by a margin of five or more runs and then win the Series was the 1934 Cardinals who beat the Tigers 8-3 in Detroit in the opener and went on to win the series in seven games.

Graham Watson director of the Scottish Institute of Sport Foundation has called for sport to be treated by government in the same way as health or education to give a clear signal that physical activity is taken seriously at the highest level. ADVERTISEMENTThe current Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson has to juggle her job with responsibility for both culture and tourism. Critics argue that the crucial job of promoting sport as a tool to improve the country’s health is therefore being neglected. Watson said: “If you genuinely believe that sport has a wider role in education health culture Scotland’s status and standing in the world then yes we should have a sports minister at the top table.

1 Roger Federer became the first player in the pen era to win 10 tournaments in three straight seasons as he easily dispatched Chilean Fernando Gonzalez in the final of the Madrid Masters — the eighth of nine Masters Series events this year. The top-seeded Federer toppled the 10th-seeded Gonzalez 7-5 6-1 6-0 in under two hours on Sunday. Federer who captured 11 titles in 2004 and 2005 improved his record this season to 82-5 and has won his last 19 matches. The Swiss superstar won his 43rd title moving him one behind Thomas Muster for 11th on the all-time pen era list. This is his fourth Masters Series title tying the mark that he and Rafael Nadal set in 2005.

Cheruiyot was unable to celebrate his victory though as after crossing the finish line he slipped and banged his head on the ground. Cheruiyot remained down for a few minutes before being transported to a hospital for a precautionary exam. Cheruiyot edged fellow Kenyan Daniel Njenga by just five seconds for the victory. Berhane Adere of Ethiopia won the women’s portion of the race with a time of 2 hours 20 minutes and 42 seconds.
