The Tigers could have suspected a Yankee plot to sell them one of New Yorks bridges — or at least for the Yankees to make their getaway across those bridges while the Tigers were still wearing out their arms in Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. Instead the Tigers took the slip-up as merely the normal Major League Baseball bumble that it was — with officials letting the Yankees know that Wednesdays game had been called off while the Tigers and the paying customers were still waiting around.

By Elias Sports Bureau Inc. Special to ESPN InsiderA daily glance inside the numbers from the world of sports:MLB• The Yankees were 0-for-18 with runners on base in their Game 3 loss to the Tigers. That’s the worst such performance for any team in any game in postseason history. The previous worst was an 0-for-17 with runners on base by the Twins in Game 2 of the 2002 ALDS against the A’s. The Yankees have not scored a run since.

toolsContainer –>. toolsRight –>By HARVEY ARATN Published: ctober 6 2006 ”How long are they going to worship this guy?” Tom Glavine once said to Greg Maddux in a television commercial while Mark McGwire belted batting practice home runs to the cheers of fans and squeals of the blond bombshell Heather Locklear. In that celebrated 1999 Nike spot Maddux trotted out his own groupie come-on ”Hey we got Cy Young winners over here” before both pitchers came to the decade-defining realization that ”Chicks dig the long ball. ” Fast forward seven years with McGwire long gone and widely viewed in disrepute to the National League division series which last night starred Glavine — no virgin to the pressure chamber of postseason baseball — as a 40-year-old virtuoso. An anticipated match-up of the erstwhile Atlanta aces did not materialize because Dodgers Manager Grady Little started the Taiwanese left-hander Hong Chih Kuo against Glavine in Game 2 at Shea Stadium. Given the Mets’ late-season problems with left-handers it was not an unreasonable hunch and Kuo wasn’t half bad.
