Having covered the Giants loss out here last November I recall only a generic football crowd screaming to drown out the Giants offensive signals. Now there are intimations that the Seahawks are somehow cheating — piping in canned noise to bolster the home fans. The Seahawks deny it and the Giants officially say they dont believe it either but the reality is that most big-time sports bend and break the rules. Nothing would surprise me.

Jose Acasuso had to finish off his opponent from Friday’s rain-delayed match and in doubles action the Argentine duo of David Nalbandian and Agustin Calleri bested the Aussie tandem of Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley to finish off Australia. The 3-0 victory in the semifinals for Argentina ends a 25-year drought for the Argentines who last appeared in the Davis Cup Final in 1981 losing 3-1 to the United States. Rain interrupted the second rubber between the host nation’s Acasuso and former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt with Acasuso leading 4-0 in a fifth and deciding set on Friday.

In fact it boasted of being the biggest climate neutral sports event. f course the many thousands of flights taken to Germany by fans from across the planet weren’t great news. But at least – thanks to Fifa’s “World Cup environment initiative” – most of the power required to support the stadiums media centres and hospitality areas throughout the tournament (a cool 13 million kilowatt hours) is said to have been fed into the German national grid from C2-less climate neutral Swiss hydroelectric power stations. Money was also invested in providing eco-friendly energy supplies to areas of Asia hit by the tsunami.
