Blake managed to turn a one-bag match into a two-bag match but in the end Federer survived his own uncharacteristic staggers to beat Blake 7-6 (7) 6-0 6-7 (9) 6-4 and move on to the semifinals tomorrow. Federer — the best player in the world at the moment — finally made it to a night match in Arthur Ashe Stadium and displayed his power and finesse for the nocturnal New Yorkers with a full moon lurking somewhere outside the lip of the stadium. The full moon might have been a problem if well-known werewolves like John McEnroe Ilie Nastase or Jimmy Connors had been loose on the court fangs bared.

A joint Senate committee has urged the Government to spend $3million annually for the next three years to subsidise productioncosts of televising women’s sport. Prospectively a women’s sports body would make a deal with anetwork then apply to the Australian Sports Commission forfunds. Senator Kay Lundy shadow minister for sport and recreationsaid: “Women’s sport (is) caught in a vicious cycle that sees alack of media coverage mean less sponsorship which means lessincome which means less resources to invest in the product topromote better media coverage. It is very frustrating.
