    The traditionally female sport has been gaining popularity in recent years and is on the verge of opening its doors to a new group of players – men. rganisers say as netball gains in profile women are increasingly refreshing their schoolyard skills and they’re encouraging the men to join in. Rhiannon Ace and Jamilla Abbott may not be household names like Henson Giggs or Bellamy just yet. But Claire Knowles development officer at the Welsh Netball Association said she has noticed more people coming into the sport. She said “It has been increasing in popularity and we have had a lot of interest from mixed clubs… Claire said “The fact that we are having to provide more opportunities for the whole range of performances is an indication that it’s getting more popular. And now the men who are traditionally excluded from netball outside the very junior levels are becoming interested. Kieran Harris commercial director at the Welsh Sports Association began playing at the Welsh Netball Association’s Millennium Stadium event last summer an event which is due to be repeated in January 2007. Since then the 33-year-old has been playing with colleagues every Friday at lunchtime and the group has become so popular that he is now trying to set up an official mixed team. He said “I do a lot of sport and I was really surprised by how much physical energy it took. “It’s an exceptionally good workout and that’s why I play it now. But like any mixed sport it’s very social as well.
