In front of a pro-Gatti crowd Baldomir controlled the fight hurting his opponent a number of times before finishing him off two minutes 50 seconds into the ninth round. Baldomir making his first title defense improved to 43-9-6 with 13 knockouts. He also improved to 19-0-2 in his last 21 fights. Gatti was making his first appearance in the welterweight division and had trouble after spending time in the junior lightweight and junior welterweight divisions.

Top-seeded James Blake second-seeded Andy Roddick and No. 4 Robby Ginepri all advanced with straight-set victories. Blake who is a career-high sixth in the ATP rankings had the biggest challenge. Blake won two tiebreakers to get past 10th-seeded Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (2) 7-6 (5).
