    The race is already without the retired Lance Armstrong who won’t be riding to defend the crown he has held for seven years. Now the event will be minus Ivan Basso and Jan Ullrich among other riders. Ullrich the 1997 champion was suspended from the race along with T-Mobile teammates scar Sevilla and Rudy Pevenage. Basso Spanish racers Francisco Mancebo and Joseba Beloki were also barred from the race.

    This isn’t one of those stories asking you to forgive the referees for some of the absolutely ridiculous calls that have forced world class players to the bench for an important game. This also isn’t one of those stories that lays blame squarely on the referee either. It’s more of a story which aims to blame nearly everyone from the referees to the players coaches and even FIFA. The Portugal-Netherlands nightmare of a soccer game seemed to be the final straw.

Jesse Jackson and pro sports agent Dwight Manley for help inrebuilding its financially strapped union. Manley said he signed a two-year contract to become the Guild’snational manager. The contract allows him to appoint a co-managera position he suggested Jackson could hold following a meeting withGuild members earlier this week. Manley said Thursday that Jackson would be involved with theGuild but did not specify in what capacity he would serve.
