The job opened when Raymond “Smoke” Laval resigned June 4 after five seasons and two trips to the College World Series. It was a disappointing season for the Tigers who didn’t get an invitation this year to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 18 seasons. Last season was the first time LSU had failed to win a regional in 11 seasons. Laval’s five-year record at LSU was 210-109-1 — 88-60-1 in SEC games.
